Project Description

In the national context of Pakistan, the Walled City of Lahore stands out for the clashing contrast between the astounding urban and cultural heritage of the city and the populations’ of poverty .

The purpose of the study was to identify a project aimed at the sustainable development of the Walled City of Lahore, that will ensure the preservation of cultural heritage while exploiting it as a resource to alleviate poverty and improve the living conditions.

The larger proposal is complemented by the outlines of a pilot project, involving a portion of the walled city, to showcase methods and benefits of the overall approach. This target area is the Royal Route, the trail that the Moghul Emperors followed entering the Walled City from Delhi Gate to reach their Palace.

In 2007, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture entered a PPP agreement with the provincial government of Punjab to provide technical and financial assistance for the project. Implementation started with a pilot project and activities are still underway.
